Semipalmated plovers are frequently found on beaches and mudflats in the continental US in winter; in summer they breed in the Arctic. The bird in the upper left photo was approaching its nest on a gravel road in Adudlik Marsh, near Churchill, Manitoba. Several other birds (including the one giving the 'broken-wing' display) were breeding on the north slope of Alaska The rest of the images show winter-plumage birds (although the flying plover is approaching summer colors). I took the photos at Bolsa Chica wetlands, Crystal Cove State Park, and the Salton Sea, all in southern California, at Fort DeSoto Park, Florida, and near Barrow, ALaska. |
