Plains-wanderer        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This unique bird inhabits the dry grassy plains of south-eastern Australia.   Plains-wanderers are nocturnal and extremely difficult to find, unless you are guided by someone familiar with their habits.   This species shows reverse sexual dimorphism, with females being larger and more brightly colored than males (bottom).   The photos were taken in a cattle paddock near Deniliquin, New South Wales.
