Least seedsnipe; Chilean name Perdicita        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Seedsnipes are a small group of shorebird relatives from South America.   They live in open areas and are herbivorous; apparently they do not feed extensively on seeds, despite their name.   The least seedsnipe was fairly common in open grasslands and rocky areas in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in southern chile.   Adult males have a striking black, gray, and white pattern on the underside but unfortunately I could get only one rather heat-wave blurred image of this (upper right).   Their backs are highly cryptic, affording good protection for these ground-dwelling birds.
