Kildeer        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Kildeers are found across much of North America and often breed very close to human habitations.   They have typical small plover markings, with brown backs, white bellies, and black bands on the forehead and breast (two of the latter, in this speices); the base of the spread tail shows considerable rusty-orange coloration.   The sitting birds were feeding in a flooded field at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California; the juveniles were in the same location.   For both, I used my car as a hide and took the pictures while resting the telephoto lens on the window frame.
Photographs of kildeers in flight are on this page.
