American avocets nest throughout much of North America, and during breeding season both sexes take on a rusty-tan coloration to the head and neck.   I photographed most these birds as they flew near their nests at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area in southern California; the winter-plumage bird at the bottom was at Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, CA.   Other views of avocets are here.
