Black-necked stilt        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like great blue herons, black-necked stilts are highly photogenic birds that I've always had frustrating photographic results with.   Capturing a really attractive combination of light, pose, and background to suit my idea of a 'good' picture has been a challenge.  These are my best efforts so far.   Most were taken in overcast conditions, but I used fill-in flash to add some contrast and color, and put a 'highlight' in the eye.  The birds in several of the photos below were resting near a nest at Bolsa Chica wetlands, on the coast of Orange County, California; the baby stilts below are a few days old.   A few images show juvenile stilts, with brownish backs and greenish legs.   Other adults were in Palo Alto, California and the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, CA.
