Like many shorebirds, black-bellied plovers undertake long migrations, and they are sleek, graceful fliers with subtle but attractive patterns. The white tail and rump are good field marks, as are the black 'armpits' at the base of the underwing and in summer plumage (shown here) the namesake black underparts. These birds were photographed in April at the Salton Sea in southeastern California. This page shows black-bellied plovers (mainly in winter plumage) at rest, and this page shows winter-plumage birds in flight.
