Whiskered terns are small marsh terns of Europe and Asia. In breeding plumage their dark gray underparts form a nice contrast with the white cheek, red bill, and black cap (although I don't think they are nearly as strikingly patterned as the white-winged black tern, which often breeds in the same areas). This bird flew past me in a flooded meadow in Biebrza National Park, Poland. |
