The small mew gull (named for its call) nests in the interior of Alaska and Canada, and often startles visitors by its habit of sitting on the tops of spruce trees (or sometimes cars). They breed on the ground like most gulls, and the chicks are tan-gray camouflaged, with big webbed feet and an ability to swim shortly after hatching (again like most gulls). These birds were photographed in Anchorage, Cordova, Denali National Park, Anchorage, and Fairbanks (all in Alaska), and in Monterey and the Salton Sea in California. |
