Little gulls are a Eurasian species, with a few isolated records of breeding in North America. Adults are gray and white, with a blackish head when breeding. Juveniles, like this one, show much more dark coloration; they also lack the characteristic dark underwing of adult birds. This one was photographed on a hot, humid August day at the Salton Sea in southern California: thousands of kilometers from the species' typical range. |
