Herring gulls are found in both North American and Eurasia. They are typical gulls with gray backs, black outer primary feathers, and white plumage elsewhere, with bright yellow beaks and pinkish legs. The head and neck develop a smudgy appearance in winter plumage (left image and below). The nesting bird was in the 'Grainary Ponds' at Churchill, Manitoba, and the winter-plumaged birds were at the Salton Sea and the small town of Lakeview, both in southern California. This species' wide variety of wingtip color patters is evident in the flight shots. |
