Crested terns are widely distributed around the coast of Australia. They are large, elongate birds that (except for the yellow bill) resemble the elegant tern of California and Mexico. Like many terns, adults have a solid black cap and crest during the breeding season, as shown here. In the image above, a male tern is courting a female, offering her a small fish. I took these photos on a rocky intertidal platform in Wombara, on the coast of New South Wales near Wollongong, and on a beach in Wollongong itself. |
