Like many shorebirds, willets breed in the continental interior and winter in coastal areas. They are common in California, and their flashing black and white wing patterns (seen here) and loud calls are familiar to most beachwalkers. They are gray in wither and have a mottled camouflage pattern in summer -- but always show the flashing black and white wings. These were at the Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, the Salton Sea, and on beaches on the Monterey Peninsula, all in California.
