Sanderlings are the quintessential beach birds, running before the waves in animated flocks along almost all of the coasts of the temperate and tropical Americas. They disappear from the south in the northern summer, moving up to the high Arctic to breed. They fly in tightly coordinated, often very large flocks that swoop low over the waves and land on the run in front of waves, as some of these birds are doing. The photos were taken in Pebble Beach and Moss Landing, California.
Running sanderlings can be seen on this page.
