Short-billed dowitchers turn bright
rusty-red in breeding plumage (usually seen only in the spring). The ones above
were busily feeding in the 'grainary ponds' near Churchill, Manitoba; I had
to time the exposures to the brief intervals when they raised their heads for
a look at me.
