Black-tailed godwit        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Black-tailed godwits breed in northern Europe and Asia; they are rarities in North America.   The breeding plumage, is quite flashy and they have some dramatic flight and wing-flapping displays to show it off.   These photos of spring-plumaged birds foraging in a meadow or cruising past at high speed were taken in the wetlands of Biebrza National Park, in northeastern Poland.   Winter plumage is much less dramatic.   The winter birds were photographed near Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia (they were in flocks with great knots).
