Male wood ducks, like most of these birds, are probably the most beautifully colored of the numerous species of North American waterfowl.   As their name implies, they are fond of streams and lakes in wooded areas, and typically nest in holes in trees (or nest boxes).   I photographed these wild birds at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California; more wood duck images are on this page.
