White-winged scoters are one of three species of scoters in North America, along with black scoters and surf scoters. Along the California coast, surf scoters are by far the most common species; black and white-winged scoters are quite scarce. These white-winged scoters (a male, with white eye 'crescents', and a plain brown female) were photographed at Moss Landing, California. Usually they were with a large flock of surf scoters. |
