Greater white-fronted goose        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Greater white-fronted geese are named for the small white band behind the bill, but have an overall brownish coloration, with variable amounts of black on the underside.   They breed in the far north of North America, and I took most of these pictures near the coastal town of Barrow, at the northern tip of Alaska.   The flock of geese in the flooded grassy field (including some immature birds with plain-colored undersides) was photographed at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside California; others were at the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in California's Central Valley.
