Mute swan        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The graceful mute swan is native to Eurasia but has been introduced in many places around the world.   In some spots, as in the eastern United States, these large, aggressive waterfowl have become overly-abundant pests and have to be controlled.   But in Europe their stature and beauty could be enjoyed without mixed emotions.   The golden-tinged pictures of a wild bird were taken on the Biebrza River near the small town of Burzyn in the Podlasie region of northeast Poland. My friend Marek Konarzewski took us to this lovely spot one foggy late-summer dawn, and I shot the photos after a spectacular foggy sunrise.   The other photos were taken in nearby Biebrza National Park, in spring.
