Gadwall        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Although they are not as colorful as many male ducks, I've always found gadwalls very attractive, in a subtle way.   They have elegant, intricate markings, with many fine alternating dark and light lines along the breast and sides, and a graceful overall shape.   These birds were photographed at Santee Lakes in San Diego County, the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, and near Palo Alto (all in California), and at Bosque del Apache refuge in New Mexico.
Pictures of flying gadwalls are on this page.
