Falcated ducks breed in eastern Asia (Siberia) and winter in south Asia. This male, however, apparently went off-course for several years and ended up at Colusa Wildlife Refuge in the Sacramento Valley of California in the winters of 2011-2012, 2012-2013, and 2014-2015 (not noticed, or not present, in 2013-2014). I took these photos from the Refuge viewing platform. The bird never came close enough for really good images, and most of these shots are highly cropped. Still, it was highly rewarding to see such a rare visitor. The close-up at bottom left is of a captive specimen. |
