Many of the ducks native to South America have rather subdued coloration compared to the bright hues often found on ducks from the Northern Hemisphere.   The crested ducks shown here are an example; they are mottled brown and even the 'speculum' in the wing is a subtle greenish.   Even the crest (visible in the photo at the bottom of the page) is small and inconspicuous.   I took these pictures in Parque National Torres del Paine and in Punta Arenas, in southern Chile.
