These birds, also called 'maned ducks', are common throughout much of Australia. They adapt well to civilization and often breed in cities. Like most ducks, they lay many eggs; unlike many ducks both parents (males grayish, females more brownish) help take care of the precocial young. They can be fairly aggressive in doing so (three rows down at right). These pictures were taken on a grassy athletic field, and on a University campus, in the small city of Wollongong on the southeastern coast of New South Wales. |
