Greater scaup        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The greater scaup has a rounder head and a larger bill 'tip' (see below, right) than the otherwise extremely similar lesser scaup.   Both species are common in winter in the continental US, but breed in the north.   Males have black, white, and gray plumage; females are brown with a characteristic white face marking.   The white stripe on the primaries is visible in the male at upper left.   These birds were photographed near Churchill, Manitoba, in Palo Alto, California, and at the Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, California.
