Chiloe wigeon (named for the large Chilean island of Chiloe) were easy to find but hard to photograph in Patagnia. They were fairly shy -- especially in good weather -- and allowed moderately close approach into phographic range only on one instance: howling winds in the small town of Puerto Natales, where the upper left image was taken. The male at right was protecting some young ducklings near Lago Azul in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, as was the bird in the lower left image (at Puerto Natales in high winds). The bird at lower right is a female, somewhat less colorful than adult males. |
