In late fall and winter, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico supports tens of thousands of snow geese, sandhill cranes, and smaller numbers of many other birds. The geese and cranes roost on the Refuge ponds and night, and disperse during the day to feed on nearby fields. Some nights get quite cold, and the birds end up roosting on ice, as in these images from November 2010. Photographing these birds was challenging: initially it was quite dark, and as the sun rose and passed in and out of thin clouds, colors and tones shifted rapidly and dramatically. |
