These sandhill cranes and snow geese -- and thousands of others -- spend most of the late fall and winter at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in the Rio Grande Valley of central New Mexico. They roost in wet ponds (flooded by Refuge staff) where they are fairly safe from terrestrial predators. These were photographed shortly before sunrise from the 'Flight Deck' observation area. |
