Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico is famous for its wintering sandhill cranes and huge flocks of snow geese, but it also offers lots of opportunities for scenic and landscape photography. A tradition of nature photography at Bosque is to get to the 'Flight Deck' before dawn, so as to be ready for the morning lift-off of thousands of roosting geese and cranes. On two cold mornings, while dozens of fellow photographers set up their array of lenses, I took these photos a half-hour or so before sunrise. In one photo the grass in the foreground was illuminated by the headlights of passing cars, and in the lower image, the 30-second exposure made a bright halo around the moon. In the upper left picture, a small meteor track can be seen. |
