Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico is famous for its wintering sandhill cranes and huge flocks of snow geese, like these. Often a feeding or resting flock will all roar into the air at once, especially if startled by a predator; this impressive event -- which seems to cover the sky with geese -- is sometimes called a 'blast-off'. Here are several 'blast-offs' that involved flocks feeding at mid-day. |
