In early December 2013 the weather at Bosque del Apache was fairly cold, and many of the smaller ponds were partially frozen. There were few really spectacular sunsets or sunrises while we were there, but the ice made things more interesting. Many birds were often concentrated in small areas of open water. It was amusing to watch the normally stately sandhill cranes walking with great care on slick ice, with occasional slips and face-plants accompanied by flailing wings and legs. |
