Sandhill cranes, evening flight        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Roughly ten thousand sandhill cranes spend the winter at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico.   Many of them feed in corn fields, such as the one planted by Refuge staff near the 'Farm Deck' observation area, where I took these photos.   These cranes were departing from a late afternoon's foraging shortly after sunset, and I took these pictures with electronic flash providing most of the illumination, relying on autofocus to get crisp images.
