Sandhill cranes, morning light        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Thousands of sandhill cranes, usually in family groups, spend the winter at the Bosque refuge.   At dawn they can usually be found roosting in ponds and pools, often lingering long after the geese have lifted off to seek feeding areas.   One of the many charming behaviors of cranes is the 'pointing' posture -- bent over with the neck and head parallel to the ground -- they use to indicate they're about to take off; several of the birds in these images are in takeoff mode.
