Sandhill cranes usually spend the winter in small family groups, like the one above at left: male, female, and a juvenile (without the red crown patch).   A family with two chicks is at upper right; another group, in close formation flight, is shown below.   I photographed them near the 'Farm Deck' and at one of the 'crane pools' along the highway at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico.
