Rainbow with snow geese and sandhill cranes        Images © Mark A. Chappell

In early December 2013 the weather at Bosque del Apache was all over the place.   One day there was rain, which turned into a dramatic double rainbow in the late afternoon.   At that time flocks of snow geese and sandhill cranes typically fly to the 'crane pools' along Highway 1, and I positioned myself to get shots of them as they crossed in front of the intense rainbow colors.   For once, I wished for somewhat less focal length; 500 mm would have provided a better view than what I had with 800 mm, but it worked OK. And I have to say:   these are not photoshop paste-ups -- it really looked like this.
