Macaroni penguin        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The oddly-named macaroni penguin, like its smaller relative the rockhopper (and several other congeneric 'crested' penguins) sports an elaborate set of head plumes, and a very powerful beak. This bird was nesting on Dream Island near the U.S. research base at Palmer Station off the Antarctic Peninsula, quite a bit to the south of the normal breeding range of this species.
