Gentoo penguin        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Gentoos are one of three small- to medium-sized penguins that breed in Antarctica proper (the others are Adelies and chinstraps). Unlike most Antarctic-breeding penguins, gentoos are resident year-round near their breeding colonies. They don't breed at Palmer Station (where these pictures were taken) but stray individuals occasionally visit the large colony of Adelies on nearby Torgersen Island.
