Pied herons are medium-sized, very active herons found in the tropical north of Australia, often in large flocks. This bird was feeding in a shallow pool at Fogg Dam, near Darwin in the Northern Territory. I photographed it from my car, to minimize disturbance. It was extremely alert and active as it chased small fish and water insects. The stark sunlight and the striking dark blue-gray and white plumage made proper exposure very difficult (as can be seen, the bird's white neck feathers are 'bleached out'). |
