Least bitterns are usually very shy and reluctant to show themselves, and the red-faced adult male at upper left was no exception. He's interacting with another bird but would not come any farther out of the reeds This bird was at the mouth of the Whitewater River at the north end of the Salton Sea, in extreme southern California. The other birds were at Lake Skinner and the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, also in Southern California. Some (with more heavily streaked undersides and with pale edgings on the dark back feathers) are juveniles. |
