The green heron is a common (but often secretive) small heron across much of North, Central, and South America.   Adults -- like these -- sport bright colors (especially when breeding); juveniles (several on this page) are brownish and streaked.   The adult in most of these images was at Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, California; one image shows a bird at the Salton Sea in southeastern California.
