Great-billed heron        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Great-billed herons are the Australian equivalent of the North American great blue heron, but are much less widely distributed and much harder to find than the great blue heron.   Great-billed herons are high on the 'want-list' of visiting birders, who usually have to look in isolated mudflats or mangrove swamps to find it.   This one was photographed on the small saltwater lake in Centenary Lakes park in Cairns, Queensland.
