Eastern reef egret        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Eastern reef egrets are medium-sized herons found on reefs, mudflats, beaches, and rocky shores.   They come in two color morphs, white and dark, shown here.   They behave like most herons, slowly stalking prey in shallow water, then suddenly striking.   This bird was hunting at low tide near Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia.
