Common egrets are are quintessential wetland birds with long necks and legs, white plumage, and during breeding season, long flimy plumes along the back. These birds were photographed at Little Estero Lagoon and Merritt Island, Florida, Bolsa Chica wetlands, the San Jacinto Wildlife area, and Palo Alto, all in California. Like many birds, they often look their best in early dawn light. The photo at the bottom shows the striking green facial skin acquired during breeding.
