Bitterns sometimes allow close approach but in my experience they tend to hide quickly in dense vegetation or fly away. The bird at right was in a wet meadow at Churchill, Manitoba. Light was extremely dim and the stabilization feature of the Canon lens really helped as I aimed out of the car window. The other bitterns were at Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, California, in Florida, and at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in California's Central Valley, and at Bear Lake refuge in southeastern Idaho. |
