White-tufted grebe; Chilean name Pimpollo        Images © Mark A. Chappell

We found three species of grebes on a visit to Patagonia: this species, the similar-sized but less common silvery grebe, and the much larger great grebe.   White-tufted grebes were easy to find -- but hard to photograph -- on many of the lakes, ponds, and rivers in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in south Chile.   Most of these were photographed on windy, overcast days (it was Patagonia, after all), which accounts for the somewhat subdued colors and choppy waves in the images.   The intense aqua color in two of these images stems from the glacial meltwater that feeds the lakes and streams in this region.
