The sunbittern is an elegant but rather peculiar heronlike bird from Central and South America.   They are fairly common around forested streams and rivers, moving slowly and deliberately as they stalk small prey in the water.   Their name comes from a striking display in which the wings and tail are arched over the birds' body, showing a gold and orange 'sunburst' pattern on the wingtips (some indication of this can be seen in the photo of the young bird stretching its wing; upper right).   The birds above, immediately below at right, and near-bottom right were photographed in southeastern Peru; the others are captives.
