Spoonbills of all species are strange birds (in my opinion), and the royal spoonbill of Australia is one of the weirdest. In addition to the standard spoonbill bill, the royal sports an elaborate 'mane' of white feathers. Like all spoonbills, it makes its living by filtering small organisms out of the water with 'sieves' in the beak This bird was feeding in a small pond on the campus of the University of Wollongong in coastal New South Wales. I found it very difficult to photograph (although it was pretty confiding), because it stayed in dark places but with the sun on its brilliant white plumage, making a contrast the camera found difficult to handle.
