South America has a rich 'coot fauna', with several species in Chile alone. In Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in south Chile we found two species easily, this one -- identified by the red markings on the bill and frontal 'shield' -- and the rather similar white-winged coot. The bird at left was swimming in a flooded meadow near Lago Azul; the other was in wind-stirred Lagunas Mellizas elsewhere in the park. |
