Several of the Rift Valley lakes in east Africa attract huge nomadic flocks of lesser flamingos, which feed on algae in the highly saline waters. One of the best-known places to see these spectacular congregations is Lake Nakuru in Kenya, where I photographed a tightly-packed group as they came to the mouth of a freshwater stream to drink and bathe.
