Eared grebes (winter)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Eared grebes breed on northern lakes; in winter they use both fresh and salt water (sometimes in enormous numbers, as on Mono Lake during migration; bottom left).   The winter plumage lacks the flashy head plumes and black neck coloration seen in breeding birds, but these little grebes always have an alert, active demeanor and startlingly red or orange eyes.   Grebes feed by diving and can catch surprisingly large fish.   The photos were taken in Palo Alto, Moss Landing, Mono Lake, the Salton Sea, or Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, all in California (more photos from the Salton Sea are here).
